However when I first go to the screen there is always an item already selected from the gallery by default. It will be the last one showing on the developement screen.

The worst case is when the gallery contains all the list items (about 1000 rows); with only 5 items in the gallery (after filtering the list), the delay is reduced to 2-3 seconds.
